Maria Nordbäck is a visual artist who lives and works in Vaasa (FI). Her art aims to explore our community through discussion and participation, and communication is the starting point of her work. She often works with site-specific projects and interacts with her surroundings. She is interested in community, social and cultural issues, and she wants to make art visible as a meaningful part of human life.
Participatory art focuses mainly on the process, not the finished artwork. The process creates new ways of thinking. It also gives the participants a voice and allows them to work with subjects that feel important to them.
The results of her work are often shown as exhibitions, or in public spaces, for a wider audience. The works range from videos, photos, performances, and installations to discussions and handicrafts.
